passive-agressive professors, and the students that love them

At the beginning of the semester, my Contracts II professor (I know, I know...) told the class that there would be no seating chart, and she wanted the students to make nametags for their seats. As in, the students were responsible for finding their own piece of paper and their own marker to make a sign legible enough for her to read from twenty feet away.

I have refused for eight weeks now to make a sign, mostly because if nametag-making is going to be "required" for a class, then it should be the responsibility of the requiror (the professor) to provide paper on the University's dime. I mean, we're all starving students, and the only thing that I can tell my $30K/year tuition has gone for is making a giant pile of gold coinage in the basement of the library for the Dean to swim around in, Scrooge McDuck-style. I think a few sheets of paper can be spared.

Lately, my professor has been making snarky comments at the beginning of class about the lack of nametags. Crap like, "I see this side of the room is going incognito today..."

Today, it was "I see you all think that I spent all of Spring Break memorizing your pictures."

And, predictably, the flock of 1L sheep in the class chuckle at this. Meanwhile, I sit back and refuse to create my own nametag until nametag-making supplies are provided for me. I mean, if it's enough of a problem for the professor to keep making comments about it class after class after class, that she'd just bite the bullet and bring in 50 sheets of paper and a Sharpie from the Copy Shop downstairs.

i just figured out what my tuition pays for

I hate the cold weather. It doesn't agree with my constitution. We didn't have much cold weather down south. Unlike the north, we boasted warm(er) weather in winter, edible fried chicken, and an uncanny ability to turn a two-syllable word into a six-syllable word.

Needless to say, I (like many other students) get really cranky when we come in from the frigid cold outside to discover the law school building is also ridiculously cold. Right now, I'm sitting in class with two layers of clothes and a scarf on and still freezing cold. And after five minutes of freezing, I noticed the draft above my head (in a windowless room).

That's right - my law school in the middle of Wisconsin is running the air conditioning. In February. During the coldest spell of the winter.

I don't know about you all, but in my experience, it's way cheaper to use gas to heat a building than to use electricity to run the air conditioner all day. I mean, it's not like this is the Mall of America, and we can use the body heat of all the students to heat the building instead of actual heating systems.

This only makes me wonder how much money is used to pay for the fact that the admininstration can't use energy efficiently.

and what exactly does my tuition pay for?

I made the mistake of checking the tuition rates for the coming school year.

After some quick number crunching, I realized that the $2000 increase in out-of-state tuition will cause me to run out of money sometime around February - and that's if I stop eating and manage to kick the 4-cup-a-week StarCrack habit.

Free advice for all future law students - either go where to a school that offers you merit scholarships, a school where you qualify for in-state tuition, or an out-of-state private institution (since private schools tend to offer more money to compensate for the $45K/year tuition).

...in other news, my boss just told me that I'm a "wonderful writer". I have since asked her to go back and tell my horrific second-semester LR&W professor as much, and get her to change my grade so that I don't look like I got hit with a 'tard stick over Christmas break.
