super letdown

I've decided that the best part of the Super Bowl was seeing T.J. Thyne in a cars.com commercial. Anything involving Hodgins from "Bones" makes me a happy camper...

As for the rest of the game? Since I'm fairly certain that this is neither (a) a nightmare, or (b) a parallel world that I can't escape without some sort of pocket Simon-looking device provided by The Doctor, I'll be actively trying to repress this memory.

At least Cubs season starts soon...

updateage

So where have I been over the last ten days? Well...
**Birthday. Yes, I turned 26 last weekend. Did I have a good time? Yeah. Did I get to do what I really wanted to do for my birthday? No. But oh well. I did have a very lovely dinner on my birthday after a fun trip to the corn maze, so I can't complain too much. (But I wish I had been able to find a cheaper flight to Arizona to spend the weekend with my sister, who actually would have been willing to do what I wanted to do on my birthday, instead of making plans for my birthday and expecting me to be happy tagging along with those.)
**Sick. Of course, birthday weekend ended with me getting sick, and spending most of the past week sitting in class with a fever. (Note to the rest of the UW Law School: you're welcome.) Because this is me we're talking about, of course I had to get sick during the one week this semester where I've actually had work to do. Speaking of which...
**Schoolwork. I had two writing assignments, a cite checking packet, and...something else...all due last week. I've gotten the first writing assignment back and discovered that I completely misunderstood the instructions that my professor didn't really explain at all. (Apparently, "outside case law" meant "Wisconsin cases not in the materials". Who knew?) All that work led to me sitting in the library about ready to pass out with the above-mentioned fever. Although now that I think about it, I have a feeling that the schoolwork caused my illness. I have to believe that, at this point, my body is just completely opposed to doing anything productive, and my immune system is doing whatever it takes to keep me on the couch watching TV like I should be.
**Relaxation. So I woke up Saturday morning to the sound of the fly-over at the UW football game. No, I didn't go do the cane toss. I figured other people who actually had family coming to the game needed the tickets more than I did....and besides, I won my first trial over the summer. So unless the cane toss is now giving people "find a job" luck, it's really wasted on me. Saturday night was Halloween, which involved me not getting dressed up before going to a friend's house to watch scary movies. Sunday, I went and saw Dan in Real Life, which I was very impressed with. Honestly, I think Steve Carell has more than proven that he has actual acting talent, and isn't just a funnyman along the lines of Will Ferrell. (Okay, okay. I cried during this movie. I'll admit it.)
**Football. I know I touched on the Badger game above, but I need to take some time to point out that I'm really enjoying this football season. But that's probably because I'm a New England Patriots fan, and I'm having fun taunting my friends who are Redskins fans about the fact that Washington didn't really show up in Foxborough during yesterday's 52-7 trouncing. It's just a shame that I can't get Super Bowl tickets....

highlight of my weekend

So, thanks to Peyton "Horseface" Manning and his buttbuddy seriously overrated favorite receiver, Marvin Harrison, not only did the Pats lose this weekend, but I lost my fantasy football game against the #2 ranked team in the league. Needless to say, I'm pretty bummed right now.

However, this weekend was not a total waste - I was at the UW-PSU game this weekend, and got to see JoePa go down:

Granted, it's not like being able to say "I was there when LT took down Theismann"...or even being able to say that I'm old enough to remember watching it on MNF. This weekend, though, I'll take whatever sick pleasure I can get.

best week ever

As of tomorrow, I'm done with "work" for the summer. (Interesting aside: Based on the amount of hours I worked and the amount of tuition I paid, I actually paid the school $30/hour to let me sit in a cushy office on the Square and read E! Online e-mail my east coast friends get some "law-related experience" that won't help me in the job search process one bit, according to the soulless hacks in Career Services. What was I talking about again? Oh yeah.)

So there was some funny stuff that I saw today, and I'm really struggling to decide what was funniest.

--An advertisement for an American Nazi Party/KKK rally on the Square at the end of August in which the plural form of "Nazi" was spelled "Nazies". Typos are always funny, but typos + Nazis just seems kind of hilarious to me.
--A 50-year-old(ish) guy who had hot pink hair.
--A crossdresser walking down University Ave. At least, I think it was a crossdresser. Either that, or it was a flat-chested woman who looked exactly like my dad, but taller. I'm going with crossdresser, though, just because it makes me chuckle.
--A bus company named "The Spirit of Newark, New Jersey". First of all, does Newark have a spirit worth bragging about, except "cheap(er) flights into New York City"? Second, it's New Jersey. Third, it's New Jersey. On the other hand, I guess it's worth bragging about the fact that it's not Newark, Delaware.
--Some sports writer on ESPN saying that the Dolphins will make the playoffs this year, but not the Patriots. Makes me wonder if he's been smoking whatever Michael Irvin's been dealing.

And speaking of the Patriots, I'm stoked about the fact that they're actually going to be on TV Friday night. I don't care if it doesn't count. College/pro football season is upon us, and that means I once again have something to do on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday nights.

athletes are dumb

I've been sitting here for most of the day wondering what would make someone say to themselves, "You know, Self, you're 24 and you just won a Super Bowl. Why don't you go drive around on your motorcycle without a helmet?"

And then I started to wonder what's worse... that, or saying to yourself, "Self, you're 24 and you just won a Super Bowl. Why don't you dump your clean-cut college girlfriend and start dating someone with every sexually transmitted disease known to man... someone like Tara Reid?"

Yes, I still blame Tara Reid for the Patriots not making the playoffs in 2002.
