updateage

So where have I been over the last ten days? Well...
**Birthday. Yes, I turned 26 last weekend. Did I have a good time? Yeah. Did I get to do what I really wanted to do for my birthday? No. But oh well. I did have a very lovely dinner on my birthday after a fun trip to the corn maze, so I can't complain too much. (But I wish I had been able to find a cheaper flight to Arizona to spend the weekend with my sister, who actually would have been willing to do what I wanted to do on my birthday, instead of making plans for my birthday and expecting me to be happy tagging along with those.)
**Sick. Of course, birthday weekend ended with me getting sick, and spending most of the past week sitting in class with a fever. (Note to the rest of the UW Law School: you're welcome.) Because this is me we're talking about, of course I had to get sick during the one week this semester where I've actually had work to do. Speaking of which...
**Schoolwork. I had two writing assignments, a cite checking packet, and...something else...all due last week. I've gotten the first writing assignment back and discovered that I completely misunderstood the instructions that my professor didn't really explain at all. (Apparently, "outside case law" meant "Wisconsin cases not in the materials". Who knew?) All that work led to me sitting in the library about ready to pass out with the above-mentioned fever. Although now that I think about it, I have a feeling that the schoolwork caused my illness. I have to believe that, at this point, my body is just completely opposed to doing anything productive, and my immune system is doing whatever it takes to keep me on the couch watching TV like I should be.
**Relaxation. So I woke up Saturday morning to the sound of the fly-over at the UW football game. No, I didn't go do the cane toss. I figured other people who actually had family coming to the game needed the tickets more than I did....and besides, I won my first trial over the summer. So unless the cane toss is now giving people "find a job" luck, it's really wasted on me. Saturday night was Halloween, which involved me not getting dressed up before going to a friend's house to watch scary movies. Sunday, I went and saw Dan in Real Life, which I was very impressed with. Honestly, I think Steve Carell has more than proven that he has actual acting talent, and isn't just a funnyman along the lines of Will Ferrell. (Okay, okay. I cried during this movie. I'll admit it.)
**Football. I know I touched on the Badger game above, but I need to take some time to point out that I'm really enjoying this football season. But that's probably because I'm a New England Patriots fan, and I'm having fun taunting my friends who are Redskins fans about the fact that Washington didn't really show up in Foxborough during yesterday's 52-7 trouncing. It's just a shame that I can't get Super Bowl tickets....

pain

As much as I may whine about it sometimes, I really do enjoy my alone-ness. There's something really liberating about not having to live my life as though it revolves around another person's schedule, no having to check "our" schedules to see if I can go out and do something "I" want to do, etc.

But tonight, I remembered the downside of the whole alone thing.

I got home from a wonderful night out with friends (the first night out in a while), and conveniently forgot that my parking lot is a sheet of ice. (You would think that I would've remembered, since it took me an hour and a half earlier today to dig my car out of said ice.) I'm happily strolling across the lot into my apartment when I slip on the black ice.

Like, cartoon character-style legs-over-head slip.

And then land with a crack - except this cracking wasn't the ice.

I can still feel my toes...but barely. There's this pain shooting up and down my leg right now, but it's not like a muscle pain or a bruise. It's more like someone's taking tiny needles and poking my bone really, really fast over a space of about six inches. And what sucks is that I can't get off the couch to go into the bathroom to get the peroxide to clean out the giant scrape on my elbow that also resulted from the aforementioned fall. (What's awesome is that I cut my elbow through a thick wool coat, a wool sweater, and a long-sleeved t-shirt.) And since it's 1:15 (2:15, depending on when it is we exactly spring forward tonight) on a Sunday morning, it's not like I have a lot of friends around that are free to, like, help me in case I pass out at some point in the night.

If I were in a lighter mood, I'd joke about how this is just further proof that I need to move back down south where it's warm. But...this really, really isn't funny. Rather, it's just me coming to the sad realization that maybe, just maybe, I can't do everything on my own.

coincidence?

For the record, I did not plan to get hit with an icky stomach virus today to keep me from venturing outside to class on the coldest day of the year (as in, it's -7 outside right now).

Not even I am that awesome.

(And yes, I really am sick. I'm not using that as an excuse to not go outside and subsequently lose my toes to frostbite.)

you give me fever

I'm trying to figure out why I've been nauseous and been running a fever since last night.

I really hope that the fact that I've been averaging 4 hours of sleep a night because of exams has nothing to do with that. Because if that's the case, then having that strong of an allergic reaction to studying probably isn't a good thing, considering I have 2 more exams and all.

...and yet, so far

After my fun with bird flu last spring, I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that I didn't get sick at all this semester. In fact, a friend of mine commented about how nice it was that I haven't looked like death for several months straight.

And then the headache came Saturday night...and it hasn't gone away. Rather, it's made itself at home, and brought with it a few friends: fatigue, fever, and nausea. They must be having the world's largest rave in my immune system, because I still feel terrible. Granted, I'm normally about three minutes away from falling asleep in International Boredom class...but today I physically feel my eyes shutting as Professor Spock drones on.

Now that I think about it, I can't think of one logical explanation for why I actually schlepped all the way to class today. Maybe I have some sort of neurological disease that's eaten away the "common sense" portion of my brain.

bus 2, me 0

My bus home last night was really crowded - more crowded than it normally is at 5:00 on a Monday night. So crowded that people were standing in the aisles all the way from the front to the back. (Sort of.)

I stand up at my stop, and there's three people standing between me and the door. There's enough room for those people to back up and maneuver around to let me get to the door, but they just stand there and watch me struggle with my giant laptop bag. I elbow and push my way to the door (finally), but the fact that I have to push hard enough to get past two very large men means that I'm on the stairs leading to the bus door with a little too much force. Now, I don't fall, but I push through that door really, really hard - and land on the sidewalk a little awkwardly, causing a sharp pain to sear through my big toe.

This morning, as I'm getting ready to go to class, I notice that the swelling and brusing in my big toe from the night before has gone down, and I can walk without too much pain. Considering this a victory, I head off for the bus stop a little early. I'm a few minutes ahead of schedule and about 100 feet from the bus stop when the bus comes barrelling down the street and past the stop. Yep - I was early, but the bus was earlier - it's Murphy's Law of the Madison Metro Bus.

So I decide to walk to class - it's about a 20 minute walk from my bus stop, so under normal conditions, it's not too bad. But as I'm walking towards the law school, I notice the pain in my foot starting to come back. Right now, I'm sitting in class with a throbbing big toe, and I wish I had some painkillers.

Although now that I think about it, this would've never happened if I hadn't gone to class in the first place...

an inconvenient warmth

Dear Weather,

I'm not going to complain about the fact that it's the second week of November in Wisconsin, and it was warm enough for me to go outside without a jacket today. I'm really not.

But could you please just pick a season and stick with it? I don't know how much more of this mess my allergies can take.

Thanks for the swollen eyes,
Me

it may be time to rethink my relationship with Starbucks

The story starts about six months ago, on my road trip east. At some point on I-80 in northern Pennsylvania, I noticed a deep ridge in one of my molars. I didn't think anything of it, though, because it didn't hurt.

Sunday, as I'm enjoying some granola for breakfast, I chomp down on what seems to be a walnut shell. Again, I didn' t think anything of it until Sunday night, the aforementioned ridged molar starts to hurt.

This morning, I go to the dentist and discover that the "deep ridge" in my molar is actually a fracture.

This afternoon, I get my cup of coffee to enjoy during my one class o'the day. And it hurts - bad. Real bad. As in, I almost started crying in Con Law because the coffee hurt my tooth so badly.

The worst part of all this is that I just got $45 worth of Starbucks gift cards for my birthday last week. So I either spend all of that on delicious M&M cookies (because I'm guessing the cold Frappuccino won't be much better on the tooth), or I wait until the whole tooth ordeal is over (read: I get either a filling or a root canal).

dig it: a non-law related post!

I cooked lunch for some friends this afternoon. I mean, it was great - chocolate cake, cheesy potatoes, and grilled chicken. (I'm listing the menu in order of importance, of course.)

In the midst of my gourmet extravaganza, I forgot that my oven is only about fifteen inches wide. So I go to get the casserole dish out of the oven and bang my arm against the side of the oven (that's been sitting at 400 degrees for about an hour and a half).

(long string of expletives deleted)

I now have a blister on my arm that's about an inch long and half an inch wide...the scar itself is even bigger. This is going to make for good stories for many years to come. I'd post the picture, but it's not exactly "good" - you can see that there's some serious discoloration (honestly, it looks like a giant snot rocket on my arm), but that's about it.

In the meantime, I can't wait until I can one day own my own home, so that I can have a kitchen that's large enough for someone to cook in...with an oven that actually fits a normal-sized pan. That would make me happy. (Side note: I think "kitchen large enough to cook in" would be above "maid" on the wish-list, but below "dishwasher" and "TiVO".)

Of course, if I didn't enjoy cooking, I wouldn't hurt myself doing it - because it's always the things we love the most that also hurt us the most, isn't it? The sad thing, I guess, is that I only choose to leave myself vulnerable to my stove/oven rather than members of the opposite sex. But that's another discussion for another time.

Or maybe the saddest part of the whole ordeal is that I put off going to get the requisite Neosporin and Band-Aids large enough to cover the blister until tomorrow, so that I could combine that trip to Target with my trip to Target to purchase the second season of "House" on DVD. I'll keep telling myself that it's to conserve gas and save the environment, but we all know the truth: I'm just that lazy.

i'll get you next time, gadget! next time!

Last night, a bloody battle took place inside my apartment. After the dust settled, one entity reigned victorious, while another whimpered away in defeat.

Vegetable peeler: 1, Me: 0.

Yeah, you read that right. I entered into combat with my vegetable peeler and lost. It still hurts.

I probably would've come out better if I had gotten into a swordfight with a monkey.

being lazy is a sport

I've spent so much time laying on the couch watching TV that I've actually hurt myself.

Therefore, I'm putting myself on the 15-day DL. No more laying on the couch watching TV until my back is better.

Rehab for this injury? No, it's not "working on Law Review packet". Not at all. It's more along the lines of watching TV in bed, instead of on the couch.

food for thought

The worst time to forget that ice cream makes you sick?

When you're standing in front of the Dairy Queen thinking, "you know, that Blizzard looks mighty tasty."

I really don't want to get out of bed just to go to Property.

mondays blow

Today, I missed not one, not two, but three (yes, three) buses: the bus to the gym, the bus home from the gym, and the bus to class. So my hour-long workout this morning became an hour-long workout plus another hour and fifteen minutes of walking up and down the streets of Madison (25 minutes of that in cute shoes that bloodied my feet on the way to class).

I am sitting in my fourth-to-last Crim class of the semester with a massive headache. And nausea. I'm trying to decide if I'm getting sick again, or if I just need food wicked bad. I hope it's not me getting sick, but the fact that I spent the entire weekend (Thursday night - Sunday night) on the couch and the fact that I was only awake for 9 hours yesterday would say otherwise.

But seriously - why do I go to Crim? It's completely useless - I can't remember the last time I actually learned anything in class...and my "not learning" has nothing to do with the fact that I watch baseball on mlb.tv during class. I think we've finally caught up with the point I reached in the reading a week and a half ago, which means that I *may* need to start reading again. If I feel like it. Which I don't.

And to all of the gunners who picked the day for our Crim review session - look, I understand that you want to have your weekends free. But some of us have Cubs tickets for that Friday, and unfortunately can only attend the review session if it's on a Saturday. So thanks for basically forcing me into the back end of the curve. I really appreciate it.
