quick poll

Michigan is currently getting the snot kicked out of them by Oregon (39-7 with 2:30 left in the game). Is this:

(a) Funny
(b) One of the most hilarious things to be seen on television. Ever.
(c) Excellent news for the Badgers
(d) Kind of pathetic, in an "Oh, look at Britney's latest attempt at a comeback" sort of way
(e) The end of Lloyd Carr's career
(f) Some combination of all of the above

(mis)fortune

If you open up the fortune cookie that comes with your Chinese food, and several of the words are misspelled, does that void the fortune? Or does that just mean that the fortune cookie company needs to find a new editor?

g1mm1cks

First there was "Se7en", the alternate title for the (spoiler alert) Gwyneth's-head-in-a-box thriller from, like, 1997. Then came "Numb3rs" on CBS. And now, the other day, I saw a commercial for the new movie "Thr3e". I don't know what it's about - I only remember the trailer because there was a number in the title. Does the "stop and think about it" factor mean that I should start replacing any letters in my post that look like numbers w1th th3 c0rr35p0nd1ng num83r5.

Oooh yeah. No. Believe me, it hurt to type that as much as it now hurts to go back and read it - mostly because the last time I thought this sort of thing was clever, I think I was in 4th (maybe 5th) grade, and I discovered that typing 5318008 on a calculator spells "boobies" when you turn the calculator upside down.

I'd like to know who decided that this was a good marketing strategy. Granted, it does make me think about the movie more, but not in a "wow, that looks like the next 'Gone with the Wind'" sort of way. It's more of a "is the movie that bad that they need to resort to that level?" Especially in the case of that show "Numbers" - yeah, it really is that bad. (Then again, they can't all rise to the caliber of "CSI: Miami".)

how exactly does this benefit students?

Last spring, the law school decided to get with the times and allow students to take exams on laptops. In addition to allowing students to turn in legible exams, you could run a quick spellcheck before turning in the exam, since it was done through Word.

They tell us this year that we *have* to download new exam software to take the exam. And - bonus - this version of the exam software doesn't include the option to spellcheck work before turning it in. So just like the handwritten exams, you have to sit there and go through line-by-line to make sure that everything is spelled correctly. Anyone that has ever tried to edit anything while it's still on a laptop screen knows that it's enough to drive you insane.

I'm trying to think of the rationale for this, and the only thing I can come up with is that it's not fair to the three kids in the entire law school who don't want to type their exams. The administration can't even use the "just like the real world" justification that seems to be used for everything we do, because even *real* lawyers at least get their secretaries to hit the spellcheck button before printing out their briefs.

a holly jolly exam time

Thanks to the girl sitting next to me in Con Law, I just learned that our exam is at 1:30 in the afternoon, rather than the standard 8:30 in the morning. Honestly, I don't know how I feel about that.

I know most people who read this blog would guess that I would be psyched for such a late start time - that means that I can sleep until 11:00am and not be late for my exam (unlike the time I did that in undergrad and was awakened by a phone call from my professor asking me if I intended to take the exam that was currently being proctored). But the more I think about it, that extra 5 hours gives me 5 more hours to panic, stress-eat, vomit, panic some more, and get hit by a bicyclist on the way to school.

What do you think - is the 1:30 exam a good thing that allows you to be rested, well-fed and sufficiently caffeinated, thus allowing you to perform at your peak? Or is waiting around to take a 1:30 exam just another form of torture sanctioned by the (clears throat) lovely folks in charge of the law school?

another fun reader poll!

Today, I bring you the question that's on everyone's mind:

Why did I not make Law Review?

(a) The fact that I turned in my cover sheet a week and a half late automatically disqualified me from consideration.

(b) My note wasn't left-wing enough.

(c) I'm not ethnic enough to fulfill the affirmative action diversity goals of the organization.

(d) The persons on the selection committee are not Skid Row fans.

(e) See previous post in which I indirectly compared myself to the token swimmer from the Ivory Coast (or other small African nation) that finishes ten minutes behind the rest of the pack.

(f) Other _________________________ (please specify)

The silver lining to all this, though, is the fact that I'll be able to keep up with the new television season without any distractions. I mean, the good people at Target don't look for potential cashiers with law journal experience, so why would I need the line on the résumé provided by any journal when you can be further building your encyclopedic knowledge of "Gilmore Girls"???

sweat 'till you can't sweat no more

If it's so hot in my apartment that I sweat while I lay on the couch and watch TV, does that count as exercise?

Yes?

Awesome.

(I'm going to assume that the answer is the same if I'm sweating while driving to Chicago/sitting at the ball game in 100-degree heat.)

ad nauseum

I saw a commercial earlier that disturbed me greatly.

There's a new commercial for Off! mosquito repellent that actually states that Off! repels mosquitos "that carry the West Nile virus".

I had to wait to see it a second time to make sure I heard that correctly. Turns out I did.

What's next - ads for kitchen cleaners that say that the product kills salmonella and bird flu bacteria that could be living on your countertops?

shocking

Is it stupid for me to work with my laptop actually on my lap while a thunderstorm is going on?

(I guess the only way that I'll get a definite answer to that question is if I end up getting electrocuted.)

I wish my biggest problem in life was the decision that we're going to have to wait all summer for Meredith to make:

Patrick Dempsey or Chris O'Donnell?

raiders of the remote control

What exactly about Caddyshack screams "appropriate for broadcast on ABC Family"?

Meanwhile, I finally joined the 21st century yesterday when I broke down and bought a copy of The Da Vinci Code. And after all of this time, I read the entire thing - cover-to-cover - in about 5 hours last night.

But have I even opened the Law Review packet to read the three dozen or so pages of materials? Not so much. In fact, the only thing that I've accomplished from the to-do list I composed several days ago is....okay, I haven't done any of that yet. But I have until about 9am Thursday to get it all done. That's not that bad... [cringes]

Oh well. Back to watching Gilmore and The West Wing.

mail call

Dear Dude I saw on State Street Today:

You know, when you wear your "Wanna buy a ticket to the gun show?" t-shirt, it's probably more effective if the arrows actually point to your arms instead of your ginormous man boobs.

Just a suggestion,
Me

Dear Anyone watching VH1 on Friday night around midnight:

If you are sitting at home alone watching "Can't Get a Date" on a Friday night, that in and of itself should explain why you can't get a date. Unless you're me, and then you're only watching it because your remote was way across the room.

That's totally excusable,
Me

Dear Fellow Law Students:

You ever look around and wish you could go back in time so that you could make different choices? Because I ask myself constantly what I did to turn an otherwise normal life into this quagmire that's completely FUBAR. And it's not just grades, or the fact that I was brought to this school simply to fill up the bottom of the curve and be an academic joke - I mean, why do I feel as out of place as Paris Hilton in a convent?

The last eight months of my life have been this ridiculous spiral of events that make me feel like I have no redeeming qualities whatsoever - as a student or as a person. Yeah, I chose this path. I tried to break out away from my shy and awkward past, took chances and sought opportunities, and tried to form relationships - all of which eventually left me feeling like dirt. Now I'm left wondering - since I don't have a flux capacitor handy, is it too late to change this course before I end up with the same bitter taste in my mouth towards my time at UW that I have towards my time in undergrad, and end up feeling like I wasted years of my life?

No wonder I prefer dead people and aliens,
Me

Dear Readers:

Sorry for the whiny diatribe. I have a lot on my mind, and (obviously) not a lot of people around to listen. Maybe that should tell me something.

I'll stop now,
Me

are we there yet?

If someone adversely possesses another's property in the woods, and no one's around to see it, did it really happen? Does anyone even care?

Similarly, if a building in Indianapolis starts spewing raw sewage, would anyone even be able to tell?

I was out in the sun for 30 minutes today. I think I got sunburned. But hopefully the lost souls of all past and present law students will enjoy playing with the wiffle ball that was lost in the planter this afternoon.

food for thought

The worst time to forget that ice cream makes you sick?

When you're standing in front of the Dairy Queen thinking, "you know, that Blizzard looks mighty tasty."

I really don't want to get out of bed just to go to Property.

one of life's most important questions

After reading this morning that our esteemed President refuses to rule out the option of nuking Iran to get at their atomic weapons arsenal, I began to wonder exactly what the ramifications of such a (poor) policy choice would be.

Assuming we bomb them in the next few months, what would be more likely to happen by Labor Day?

(a) The Cubs in first place in the NL Central
(b) Complete and total nuclear holocaust
(c) Both (a) and (b) - because it's all a part of the Curse
