in the heat of the night

It's been about 95 degrees here for the past week or so. My apartment has no air conditioning. Even with five fans running at all times, the temperature inside has been about 150 degrees...and is the most humid place north of South Carolina.

Boss: What's to stop some sheriff on a crusade to make prisons the most miserable place possible?

Me: Not much.

Boss: There was a big deal a few years ago about them putting air conditioning in the super max prison. They said if they did that, prisoners might not suffer enough.

Me: If they did that, I'd move in.

after all, tomorrow is another day

My day started out really, really well. It involved me getting caught in a downpour (with an umbrella, mind you) and missing the bus. Apparently, me running towards the bus and waving my arms frantically didn't tip off the bus driver to stop the bus, and none of the passengers felt like yelling to the driver to stop for the drowned rat-esque woman running down the street.

So then I had to go home and wait for the next bus, arriving half an hour later. By the time I got home, my work clothes were soaked completely through, and I had to change into dry clothes before I went back out into the rain.

Then I had to skip my morning coffee so that I would only be 45 minutes "late" instead of an hour "late". I finally got over not having my morning coffee around 5 this afternoon - that's when the hot and cold flashes and the lightheadedness finally subsided. (Side note: I *think* I may have a caffeine addiction problem. Oh well.)

To top it all off, I received the first actual, concrete deadline of my internship today. But on the bright side, the deadline doesn't actually require me writing anything. See, all my boss wants me to do in my "writing-intensive" internship is to read the motions and the replies, and then come into his office to discuss the issues before he e-mails his two cents to his boss. The downside, however, is that I actually have to show up on time tomorrow in order to get a jump on reading the documents, since I definitely ran out of the office half an hour early today.

At least it's not supposed to rain...

is there something that you're not telling me?

My boss gave me a new assignment today. He spent about 20 minutes explaining just how factually and legally boring the case is. He then laughed and said:

"This case is pretty much a dog. Have fun!"

I just stared at him, smiled weakly, and thanked him - because my only other response was to ask him what I did that time to make him mad.

my cover is blown

My boss came into my office today, sat down, and uttered the phrase that I have dreaded hearing for a long time:

"You're not really getting this."

I had to bite my tongue to keep from asking him why it took so long for him to figure out that I'm a moron.

so little to say

Yeah, I got nothing.

I finished The X-Files season 9 the other night, and so I've been kind of wandering around aimlessly for the last few days trying to figure out how I should occupy my ridiculous amount of free time.

(Side note: I should never be allowed loose in the book section of Target again.)

It's definitely difficult to come up with stuff to write about now that I'm not spending my days surrounded by douchebag law students. I mean, the utter lack of any human contact in my life is pretty pathetic...but then I think about the people with whom I could be spending my time, and suddenly sitting at home watching TV doesn't seem so bad.

And tomorrow's Friday, which means that I don't have to go to work. (Reason #854 why my summer job is way better than the clinics.) Life is good.

when i think about the truth, i touch myself

I could blog about my new internship: how I'm completely underqualified to do anything there, how I wish I knew how criminal trials were supposed to work (instead of having to reference the LexisNexis Crim Pro outline every two hours), how I don't know the Federal Rules of Evidence, and how I wish that they knew that they have the Class Idiot working for them.

But I'm not going to do that.

Tonight, it's all about watching the last three seasons of "The X-Files"... partly because I need a refresher course on the truth, and partly because the only thing I've understood since coming to law school is television (even Chris Carter is more comprehensible than most of the crap I've read in school).
