do you accept this declaration of shenanigans?
Two posts in one day - can you believe it?
So this morning, I opened up iTunes to purchase that song from "Once" that won the Best Original Song Oscar last night. I get to the soundtrack's page and discover that the song I'm looking for (and, incidentally, every song on the album) is only available if you purchase the entire album.
And then I realized that this is a rather bizarre trend on iTunes - I've gone in to buy songs before and then discovered that they're the only track on an album that isn't available for 99-cent individual download, but are only available if you buy the whole album.
I'm pretty much convinced that the rationale behind this is to force people to buy entire albums instead of just the one song that they really like. But does this happen everywhere you go to purchase digital music, or is iTunes just a communist plot to take over the world through forcing people to buy a ton of albums for $9.99 each just so that they can hear that one song they liked in the first place, only to discover that the rest of the album blows. Or does this only happen in certain genres of music - like, I could buy whatever crap Rihanna puts out for 99 cents a song, but if I want something a little more obscure, I may have to buy the whole album.
Whatever. I'll just go buy the CD at Target. Yeah, it's probably more expensive that way, but if I'm going to be buying the whole CD, then I at least want the original liner notes. Therefore, I'm calling shenanigans on iTunes (or, if you prefer, I'm putting iTunes on notice). Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll be over here hiding from Apple's henchmen.

off notice
Those who have read this blog over the past semester know that I am not exactly a fan of the Law School Bookmart. In early September, I put the Bookmart on notice for not buying back a book that I bought for a class that got cancelled.Today, after my evil, evil International Law final, I made my way to the Bookmart to get rid of my ridiculously overpriced (~$120) book that I opened no more than a dozen times all semester. And I walked away with (a) no book, and (b) $37 dollars. While it's not a lot of money, it's more than the $10 I was expecting. And it finally provides some justification for taking that god-awful class. The Bookmart is now off notice. Labels: bookmart, law school douchebags, the notice list
murphy's law school
It's no secret that I hate waking up for class. But today, in honor of the first day of classes, I decided to show up on time (actually, early) for my 9:55 class. I got to the school at 9:30, only to discover at 9:33 that the class was cancelled for the day. This is what I get for actually deciding to come to class instead of sleeping until 1:00. As omens go, this isn't exactly a good omen for the coming semester, but it hasn't exactly reached "getting hit by a bicycle" proportions yet.On the bright side, though, I've already finished my homework for tomorrow so that I can watch the all-new episode of "House" and not be burdened by school.(To be fair, the professor is sick, and it's not exactly anyone's fault that the class was cancelled. I can only be so insensitive, I guess.) Meanwhile, I'm now sitting at home enjoying my new baby TiVo and the Dane Cook comedy special I recorded last night...and I can't promise you that I'm going back for my Con Law class.UPDATE: The class in question has now been canceled for the semester. So I go to the bookstore to return the paperback supplement that I bought. Their response? "Umm, we can't take this back. The cover's a little worn in one corner." So, essentially, I'm being punished for buying a book for a class that eventually got canceled because, well, I bought the book thinking that I'd have an assignment for the first day and, upon seeing there was no assignment, stored the book in my locker. The lesson: Don't buy your books until after your classes start - being unprepared for Day 1 is way preferable to being screwed out of some cash because you had to carry the book either to the library, the locker, or home. (I mean, what are the odds that the book will remain in 150% perfect condition after being carried somewhere in a bag or left in a locker for a few days? Slim-to-none.) And I'm putting the law school bookstore on notice for this - along with the SBA and bears.Labels: bookmart, classes, the notice list
too little, too late
Apparently, someone on the SBA got wind of my jihad. (Okay, maybe I'm not the only one who complained; I'd just like to think that someone is actually reading this and listening to me. Humor me, people.)
When I got back from the gym this morning, I found a clarification e-mail from the SBA regarding locker cleanout which contained the following:
"7) Our apologies for not notifying you all of the sticker removals, we will do our best to notify you when any new maintenance will take place."
That's great and all, but I really would like Jethro Q. Walrustitty back. As you cannot restore me to the position I was in prior to your nefarious actions, I will not be backing off. Besides - there are no "take-backs" in the declaration of holy war.Labels: the notice list, the ridiculous SBA
my jihad against the SBA
Dear SBA,
I understand that you will be cleaning out my locker if I don't do it myself by May 14th. I am okay with this, as I have two weeks notice. HOWEVER, I would've appreciated SOME notice that you were going to be taking the decorations off of the front of everyone's locker. I really got a kick out of my advertisements for the Silly Party, and Prime Minster candidate Jethro Q. Walrustitty (whose main campaign promise is that he will do nothing whilst in office), and I'd like to think that the comics brought smiles to the faces of those around me.
Seriously, you couldn't have put this in one of your thousands of e-mails? You clog up my Inbox daily with e-mails telling me to send in outlines for the outline bank, stop by whatever table is taking up room in the atrium that day, take surveys that (let's be frank) don't matter at all, corrupt future 1L's by mentoring or leading small groups...why in the world would you decide to stop the barrage now? At least Carrie Bradshaw got a Post-It when Berger dumped her...
I see now that all of you are a part of the conspiracy that I fight against every day. Your goal is to make us all into the same mindless shells whose eyes cloud over with black oil; who wander the stacks of the library muttering Bluebook rules under our breath; who shapeshift into Walter Dickey any time anyone so much as mentions the Wisconsin Statutes.
In short, THANK YOU for stripping my locker (and thereby me) of my individuality, and that last glimmer of enjoyment I was able to glean from my days in the law school building.
Let the deluge begin,
Me
P.S. I'd ask who I have to blow to get a link added to the "Student Blogs" list on the SBA website...but since I've declared jihad and all, I'm guessing that's out of the question, eh?
P.P.S. Why is Zack Morris on ABC's "Commander in Chief"? I mean, Geena Davis is bad enough, but when my brain hears Zack Morris and doesn't see "Saved by the Bell", stuff starts short-circuiting and smoke comes billowing out of my ears...not a pretty sight. Not that you have anything to do with the post-SBTB career of Mark-Paul Gosselaar; I'm really just curious here. So...thanks.
